It all started with the simple task of polishing some of the set furniture. The crew guys took the Pledge and polished a podium and a small end table. That was it.
Unfortunately they polished these pieces while they were still onstage, and not all of the Pledge was contained only to the podium and table. Some of it got on the stage floor. The WOOD floor. Imagine how silky smooth your coffee table feels after you Pledge it. Now imagine how silky smooth the stage floor was. Uh oh.
So the task was to make the floor not deadly.
Plan A: Coke it.To "
Coke the floor" is to mop or wipe down the stage floor with Coca Cola. For shows involving a lot of dancing Coke is added to the mop water every day. It makes the floor a little sticky which is good because it isn't slippery. So we tried with the Coke. We put layer after layer of coke down on the slippery spot until our shoes were sticking to the floor, but when the show started the actors were sliding all over the place. With each exit we had another actor saying "the floor is really slippery out there."
Suddenly even places that hadn't been Pledged were slippery. We attribute this phenomenon to two things. 1 - it was being tracked around the stage on the actor's shoes, and 2 - when a cast gets it into their heads that there is a slick spot on the floor, suddenly the whole stage is an ice arena. It was in their heads. Great.
Plan B: Coke AND Iced TeaWe use powdered iced tea in the show and its sticky so we sprinkled some onto the stage and then spread it around with a Coke wash cloth. This was at intermission. The audience had no idea what was going on, they just saw us wiping down the floor then sliding around on it.
As soon as Act 2 started the actors were slipping all over the place again.
Plan C: VinegarOur Stage Manager Amanda looked it up online. What gets through Pledge? Vinegar. So when the show ended we mopped the whole stage with Vinegar water. It smelled awful. Either awful, or like Easter.
Plan D: Special SoapThe internet also mentioned a special soap. So we bought the soap and this morning before the show we mopped the whole stage with this soap. Wardrobe has also cleaned off all of the shoes. Hopefully this works. If actors start complaining about a slippery floor again so help me...
