HOME!

I took some pics of my apartment as I was packing last night. I have one of just the tree but you can see the presents under it so I can't post it. ;)


Along with being fun and festive, the lights were very helpful in brightening my very dark apartment. It will be hard to take them down and go back to darkness.


I got up this morning at 5:45 AM Cleveland time, got on my plane around 12, and made it to Utah around 7:30 Cleveland time. The long day was made longer by a nagging headache, but I flew Southwest and they completely won me over!

Southwest Pros:
I changed both my to and from dates for no fee, and it was cheaper so they gave me credits to put toward a future trip.
I didn't pay to check my bags.
They gave unlimited snacks and drinks.
One of those beverages offered is....HOT CHOCOLATE. (They could've only done that and I would've been won over)

So from now on I will try my darndest to only fly with them.

Now I'm sitting in the family room and realizing how I've gotten so used to living in a tiny space. Dad's kitchen is way bigger than my apartment. "Have you seen this refrigerator? It's GINORMOUS!" I kinda feel like I have everything Dad has in miniature. Sad.

I am so excited to be home. I love the feeling I get when I first see the valley and the mountains, and then when I pull onto my street.

Coming home is one of my favorite things in life. Maybe that's why I always leave, so that I can come back home.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas


The second week in November when I got to work, I arrived to this:


This really is the BEST way to start off a day of work.


Working on a Christmas show just increases the fun.

Even better? Buying Christmas sweaters at the Salvation Army black friday sale and having a photo shoot with my fellow stage managers.




Me, Jen (the stage manager), and Melissa (the Production Assistant for the other theater who is working as a crew member for this show). We are having so much fun.



We asked our grouchy sound guy to take a few pictures for us. He was acting all annoyed, but then he came up with this pose. We were all laughing so hard by the end.




It really is the most wonderful time of the year. I hope everyone enjoys it and finds those simple ways to serve and show love.

Thankful.

Happy Thanksgiving everybody! This is only the second time I haven't been home with my family for this holiday, which I feel is a blessing in itself.

Today I am grateful for many things, but most especially:

  • My Dad that taught me well and makes me want to be better.
  • A job that doesn't feel like work.
  • The Gospel that gives me the answers.
  • Freedom. Agency.
  • Answers to prayers that come not just in the form of people, but many many people.

The 4 Day Weekend to Remember

When I was negotiating my contract with CPH I got this weekend off so that I could go on a Sisters Weekend. The trip with the sisters fell through though, leaving me with a lack of plans. I was worried at first because I didn't want to spend the whole time bored. Fortunately, that's not what happened.

On Friday night I drove down to Akron where the singles branch was having a game night. I always have fun with my Akron friends and this was no exception. I played Settlers of Catan (and won), Garage Band, and American Idol Karaoke.



This is me and Jim singing "Hey There Delilah". My face looks really worried because I was following the little arrow that shows how off key I am.

After the game night we went over to a friend's house where I met Josette's hedgehog Harvey. (it's a girl)


How cool is this? She had just woken up so she was very pokey. It came up in conversation that hedgehogs can swim. Josette said that she'd only ever bathed Harvey in the sink so she hadn't had the chance to swim. SO....experiment!



I just can't get over this. So cute.

I got back to my apartment and in bed around 2 am. By 11 the next morning I was at the institute for the Turkey Bowl and lunch. It was 70 degrees and sunny. One of the most beautiful Cleveland days I've seen. We played football and frisbee on campus by the football stadium and I made a lot of new friends. I forgot my camera so I used someone's ipod touch, but now that I think about it I probably won't see those pictures ever again.

The other highlights of the day include the movie "Morning Glory" and a bonfire that was like an hour away. I was completely toast by the end of it all, but it's the most fun I've had on a day off for a long time.

Today was my last Sunday off for a while. I went to the singles branch and their linger longer where I fell in love.

Get this:
Chocolate chip cookie dough rolled into balls and dipped in chocolate. aka chocolate covered cookie dough! We thought they were just cookies until we bit into them. How have I never thought of this before?!

And I still have tomorrow off so the weekend isn't even over yet!

it's like every decision is a life changing one

Just spent the evening with a friend trying to help her figure out what to do with her career. Because I have applied to/changed jobs, moved cities, and followed my heart so often in the past few years, I was able to give her some advice.

Sure, being single has it's perks. We aren't tied down and can decide for ourselves which job to take and city to live in. The thing is...sometimes it would just be easier to be tied down to a certain place. It would eliminate so many of the really tough decisions. We all crave stability every now and then, and today was her day.

I've learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way he/she handles these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights. I wave as the shows fly by

I work with a lot of really great people. I was pondering this weekend why I enjoy their company so much. I am generalizing, but I think it's because people who work in the arts are just more emotional. I enjoy getting to know them and spending time with them because they are just so loving.

We closed An Orchard on Saturday and afterwards was surprised at how many people told me they loved me as we hugged goodbye. These are people I didn't know 2.5 weeks ago. This process will do that to ya. Not only are we all emotional, but we are also spending a LOT of time together in the best and worst of moods.

This show was an awesome experience because every person involved (stage management, crew, actors) was a "single adult". aka: we didn't have to deal with old or married people. ;) jk, but that really did make it a fun environment. Like college. And today I get to start with This Wonderful Life.

NBA....check.

I had been looking at tickets and times I would be available to go to an NBA game when out of the blue my friend Tali called me up.
"I know you probably have a show, but I have tickets to the Cavs next Tuesday and wondered if you would be interested."
Just so you know, this is the first Tuesday night I've had off in like two and a half months. FATE! Of course I'm going!

Tali is one of my closest friends in the Branch. She jokes that we only see each other every 3 months because our schedules are so opposite. It's true. I feel lucky to have seen her 3 times in the past 2 weeks.

The game was great. We were down a lot, but made a run in the 3rd quarter that was very exciting. We were even winning at one point, but lost it in the 4th quarter. It's sad, the fans are still getting used to having a losing team.


This was during their 3rd quarter run.

I got very excited by the red, white, and blue building to celebrate voting day. I have a friend who works for the company that lights this building. He gets so frustrated because they have so many colors and options, but it's usually just purple. I'm excited for what they do for Christmas.


My list of professional sports is quickly being checked off. NFL, MLB, NBA...now people are talking Hockey and I am saying...OF COURSE!

This song was on in my Ford Taurus station wagon one night when I was dropping my high school best friend Staci off at her house. The drop off turned into circling the neighborhood for a bit while we had one of the best conversations I remember having with her. She probably doesn't remember, but when that song comes on, I think of her and how supportive she was that night.


I must be getting old. When I think about all of the amazing people I've met in my life and how they have influenced me for the better, I think it is too many to count. I am one very lucky girl.

Tanna holds a special place in my heart

Day #6 A Song That Reminds You Of Somewhere

When I was in Vanuatu I served on a fairly primitive island called Tanna. It was amazing. We were running low on full time sister missionaries so for 6 weeks my companion was a district missionary from one of the villages I was serving in. There were definitely moments during this period when I felt isolated and alone. Every other week the Zone Leaders would pick us and the other 2 Elders up and take us down to "town" for a meeting and to buy supplies. They had an Enya cd.

We don't need to discuss whether that is ok or not because I definitely felt comforted when I heard this song as we were driving through the jungles of Tanna. I can't listen this, or much of Enya, without going back to Tanna and those HORRIBLE roads. If you don't hang on tight to the handle above the door, you hit your head on the window. The roads were just wide enough for the truck, and the bushes were like walls on other sides of us. In a few places, the Elders before had actually made the roads because missionaries are the only ones that ever drive up that far. I loved that.

Smile :)

I have a few days off this weekend and am considering a temple trip. The choices are Columbus (2 hrs) and Palmyra (5ish hrs). Columbus is closer, but Palmyra has all of the amazing sites. Oh ya, and one of my best friends is currently serving there so....

I have had several experiences over the past few days where people have shown me love. I think that's great. I want to be more like that. I think we get so caught up in our own worries and cares that we forget. It really doesn't take much to make someone smile. A Halloween Pumpkin chain to decorate a tiny apartment, for example. :)

I'm going to make a greater effort to make people smile.

Day #4 A Song That Makes You Sad

This song makes me sad for obvious reasons so I don't listen to it very often. Seriously it is one of the most depressing songs I've ever heard, whether you relate to it or not. This isn't a cry for help or anything and I don't want anyone out there to take this the wrong way. So don't ok? :) It's just a sad song. That's it.




A biking adventure.

Fall makes me think of soccer and going back to school.

At the beginning of October everyone was commenting about how excited they were that it is finally fall. Maybe I've never noticed before how excited everyone gets, but it helped me get excited as well.

I've gotten into the habit of asking around for ideas on fun things to do. People are usually excited to share, especially when I explain that I'm from Utah and want to experience Ohio.

A guy at work suggested this, so a few weeks ago I went.

There is a train in Cuyahoga National Park that costs like $8-15/person, but if you ride with a bike it's $2. There is a beautiful trail that runs the length of the park that you can bike. Although he hadn't been before, he had heard it was great. The trail ends in Akron, which is the highest point in Ohio, so Byron told me that if I take the train there and bike back it would be mostly downhill. Akron to Cleveland is like 40 miles.

I got on the train at the first stop and told them to take me to the last stop. About 40 minutes into the train ride I started panicking a little. It was already 1:30 and I had a show call at 6. I had absolutely no idea how long this would take. So I hopped off the train early and found this:



So I hopped on and started biking. The weather was beautiful, the leaves were changing, and I was content. I saw the first Mile Marker and it said something like 26. No big deal.


I took a few more pictures early on because I figured once I got tired I wouldn't be in the mood. I know myself pretty well.

By the time I was at mile 20 I was getting tired because unfortunately it wasn't all downhill. Actually, the majority of the time I was on a slight incline. I also noticed that there were a lot more people going the opposite direction I was. They didn't look as tired.

With time moving quickly I didn't stop for many breaks. I also didn't stop at the cute shops and markets. Don't get me wrong though, I was still having a good time. My music was on, and I wasn't too hot either. At around Mile 13 I started getting pretty tired. It even crossed my mind that I might have to call a friend or something. Then suddenly I looked to my right and saw a familiar landmark. In my head I thought, "I saw that this morning". I had seen it on my way to the train. I had passed where I parked my car!

Fortunately I had only passed it a few blocks back. Was it luck that I, the person who knows nothing about direction or landmarks noticed this diner? No. Someone was looking out for me that day. I don't know how they figure the miles but my car at the first train station was somewhere around Mile 10. It was also well off the trail. I had to get onto a main road, cross a bridge, and go down the back road to my car. That took me a few minutes to figure out. There was a "I see my car, but I can't get to it" moment. Annoying.

So I rode 16 or 17 miles. My legs were jello for a bit but I actually wasn't too tired during the show that night. In all, I consider it a great experience. The train runs through October 31 so I might do it again this week. This time I will get some more information, like maybe a map. And I will probably try going the other direction.

Happiness

Day #3: A Song That Makes You Happy

I feel like there isn't a song that can change my mood. If I'm sad, I will listen to sad music and skip over anything happy. I do have go to songs for when I'm happy though. The ones that I blare in the car and sing at the top of my lungs. I don't think anyone will be surprised that a lot of these moments involve me getting a job.

This is a song from Legally Blonde the Musical. (yup). In general I love the Act 1 Finale songs of musicals. They are usually the best of the show (Wicked: Defying Gravity, point proven). Anyway this is when Elle Woods gets the internship and is saying to her ex boyfriend that this moment is so much better than when she was with him. The copy of this song I have is an old bootleg before it actually went to stage, so its different. I also edited it a bit because it's a little awkward, but here is the "real" thing.

I'm rocking out to the fact that whatever happened before, it's gotten me to this moment. Sure all of those other places didn't like me, but now my name is up there on that list. My favorite part is as she realizes it:

"Wow! Is that my name up on that list? Does someone know that I exist? Is this a mistake? Am I even awake? Pinch me now to make sure! Yes that my name in black and white! Maybe I'm doing something right! Wow, I feel so much better than before!"

I think the version I have has better lyrics, but anyway - this song makes me happy. :)

And now I have to break the rules. I kind of promised I wouldn't do this but I can do whatever I want on my blog. This isn't even a whole song anyway. The story of how I got it is long and boring but the point is that I have it. Every time this "song" comes on I smile and sing along to all 48 seconds. I figure it's ok to add this because it's not full length. And I don't relate to it at all, I just love it.

Day 2: Least Favorite Song

You could take this to mean the lowest on my list of favorites, or the lowest on my list. Obviously there are tons of songs I hate, but I've hated this one for a really long time. So it wins.

30 Day Song Challenge

Its called The 30 Day Song Challenge. Each day you post a song that fits the category which ranges from favorite song to song that reminds you of a certain event. She says, "introspection is required." I thought it sounded like fun so I'm going to give it a whirl.

Day 1: Your Favorite Song

It's hard for me to choose a favorite of anything because it depends on what mood I am in. Music is interesting because I could do this 30 day challenge 3 months in a row and I'm sure all of the answers would be different.

My options for favorite song included the one most played on itunes, the one that's been on my *Current playlist the longest, the song I'm always happy to hear come up in shuffle and wouldn't dream of skipping, or the song I've been listening to the most over the past few weeks/months.

(*My Current playlist is my go to playlist. It is constantly evolving. Each time I get a new song it goes to my current. If I find a song I love and almost forgot about I add it to my current. Once I find that I am skipping a song on my current, I remove it. It's very sophisticated stuff.)

In the end I decided to choose my favorite as the song I've been listening to like crazy over the past few months. I heard it in early September on Chronicles of Narnia during the ending credits (that's when the gems are discovered). I was so excited about it I went straight to itunes to buy it but found I had to buy the whole album to get the one song. Lame. As I started searching the internet for "other" options, I discovered something exciting. This song was already in my itunes. Oh...I'd had this song for over a year. A friend had given it to me but I hadn't really listened I guess. I love it when stuff like that happens.

Regina Spektor's "The Call". I just think it is so beautiful.

I was watching this movie just as I had moved into my new apartment. Everything around me was changing and I was/am so far away from my family. My favorite lyric is "just because everything's changing doesn't mean it's never been this way before." Maybe that is why I love the song so much, but I like to believe that it is as simple as, it's pretty.

Day Off!

As a resident of Cleveland I get into the Zoo for free on Mondays. Guess who has Mondays off? Oh ya, me. I was discussing my plans before the show yesterday and the wardrobe supervisor Candace said she was going to the zoo today too so I should come with her.

I actually crashed on her date. Candace was taking her 3 year old nephew.


He seemed apprehensive at first but he eventually warmed up to me. We had a good time. The Cleveland Zoo is spread out and a little random. Does it make sense to anyone else that the monkeys and the fish are in the same building? The day was cut short when it started pouring rain, but nobody was out any money and we saw almost everything.


The kangaroos were my favorite.

I spent some time at my apartment cleaning and relaxing and then took off again for the Indians game.

You'll never believe this, but they won.


I love these two. They are so willing to join me in my escapades.

Such a fun filled day. Having a wonderful time doesn't have to break the bank. I spent like $10.50 total today on the ticket and a hot dog. That makes everything that happened today even better.

Another Opening Night

I just got home from my first opening night as a Production Assistant. I did it! The show went off well.

It is about a two hour production (two 55 min acts). At one point there are 2 pages of script where technically nothing is happening. The rest of the time, at least someone is doing something. I've had a great time organizing what is happening, when, where, how, and who. It is definitely a fun show.

Fun Things in this show:
  • All large props (ladders, tables, chairs, door) are on wheels and get pushed out several times with actors riding them.
  • The huge fog machine.
  • Pulling a stuffed poodle across the stage by a string.
  • I get to fire a gun backstage.

Mostly, I love that there is no time to get bored.

After opening night there is a party for all CPH employees. It was fun to see everyone and hold my head high that the show worked out.

Top Moments of the Night:
  • Having the big boss look at me and say, "Lizzie, thank you. It turned out great" and hugging me.
  • Standing backstage during the show, taking in my view of the actors onstage with the costume and deck crew backstage, and feeling a wave of appreciation come over me.
  • Looking at my phone and realizing I'd been at the party for 2 hours talking and having a good time. (I usually leave a lot earlier)
Sometimes I complain about it. I rarely know where I'll be in the near future, I have odd hours, I'm far away from my family, and there are moments of high stress. But mostly, I just love it.

I would like it on record that I went through the whole process from first rehearsal to opening night without breaking down in tears. It's been said that everyone is allowed one good cry per production. I didn't need mine this time around.

Living arrangements

It is my place.

No I don't own it, but the contract is in my name, and my money is paying the rent. Because I'm not sharing it with anybody, my word is the final word. I get to choose the furniture, the pictures, the color, and what channel the TV is on. This feels great.

Having a calm, quiet, and personal space to come home to each night after working in the theater environment is huge. This is going to work out wonderfully.

Here is a tour of my apartment:


By car I am between 5 and 10 minutes from work. There are a lot of lights.

By bike its about 15 minutes.

I haven't walked yet, but I imagine around 45 minutes.

From downtown? About a 15 minute walk.

Katie and I had such a fun shopping spree in ikea to buy everything so that it would fit in my car for the drive and I could build it once I got here. She also helped me choose which pictures to hang up, and gave me ideas for how to organize it all. Thanks Katie!

A Comedy Tonight!

The show I'm working on right now is called The 39 Steps. It is based on the Hitchcock movie, but the play is a comedy. The rehearsal process has been pretty awesome. At least 5 times a day we all get sidetracked/knocked off task for like 10 minutes because everyone in the room is laughing so hard.

Exciting opportunities.

One of my "goals" while I'm here is to go to a game of each major team here in Cleveland. They have the Browns, Indians, and Cavaliers. Last week I got a group together and we all went to the Browns last pre season game. It was a little last minute to pull it together, but it was the only game I could go to. Every one of their home games are at 1:00 on Sundays.

We all met up and walked (yes, walked. That's how close I live to downtown Cleveland) to the stadium. I was so excited!


As you can see, we were really high up, but we each paid $11.50. I think it was a great deal.



At first it was really hot, but when the sun went down it was absolutely perfect. At one point I caught myself thinking, "I am perfectly content right now". I love moments like that.

The 5 of us work for 3 different entertainment companies in town, but we all know each other from Porthouse (the theater I worked at the summer of 2008). Andrew is the guy in the middle who I didn't know well but will be moving down the hall from me in a few days.

After the game (THE BROWNS WON!) there were fireworks. Watching fireworks with Chris was so much fun. He kept up a running commentary, my favorite quote being, "wow, I love that one. I could watch that one all night long."

They really were great fireworks. I saw things I'd never seen before.

In all, it was an amazing night. Chris and Maureen later said, "experiencing things like that with you is like experiencing them for the first time all over again because you are so excited."

The Road

My road was very different from THIS ROAD, which I recommend (reading, not taking). I decided to take I-70 instead of 80 this time around because, frankly, I was bored of I-80. This trip was WAY more fun than all of the other drives from SLC to Ohio (I've done that drive 5 times now).

There are two reasons for this. Either A: I-70 is just more fun to drive than I-80, which is what I am choosing to believe. Or B: Because I took the longer way I added an extra day which gave me time to stop and smell the roses more frequently, which is much more likely. Whichever it is, here is the story:


That is my chosen path. I didn't use my GPS until I got lost in Columbus. Most of the time I just followed signs, my atlas, and my heart. A good road trip doesn't use a GPS. This is what I've decided.


The beginning was just the same as usual. Go through Wyoming, stop in Little America and get an ice cream cone. I changed this up too and went with Vanilla. It's so easy for me to choose chocolate every time that I've realized I'm missing out the tastiness of Vanilla. I didn't regret it.


I've never driven through Colorado myself before, I've just been a passenger when Dad drove so from here on out everything was new.


I stopped at the Welcome Center to get advice on roads to take info on where to stay. I was basically shooting from the hip this whole trip, which I also don't regret. Can I just say now that Welcome Centers are AWESOME. We stopped at these a lot with FoodPlay and they are always super nice and helpful. The old man gave me this Colorado hat. Such a sweetie.

I had decided to camp out one night and the first night was as good as any. So I went to a KOA just as it was starting to get dark. Unfortunately they don't rent tents and I didn't have one. "That's ok, I'll sleep under the stars." As you might remember, sleeping in my car was SO not an option. We all know that no matter how nice the day is, if you camp it will rain. So I draped a blanket over the picnic table and crawled under it with my sleeping bag. That was to stop any drizzle that may occur. What actually came is what I like to call a downpour. And it didn't stop. As soon as my blanket was soaking wet I decided to get an early start. I shoved my soaking blanket into my packed full car, getting many other things wet in the process and started out at 3:30 AM or so. I didn't get any pictures of any of that for some reason. I guess I was thinking of other things. Driving through that downpour I realized how bad it was. I actually had to pull over and wait it out until I realized it was going the same direction that I was. I ended up driving through it like 3 times that day because whenever I stopped it would catch up to me.



I did get to see the sun rise over Kansas. It was very pretty.


In a small town in Kansas I stopped and took a nap on a blanket in the park. Until the storm caught up with me again of course.


Then I drove til Wamego, Kansas where I hit the OZ Museum!


It was me and one other girl in the museum. Along with a figure of every main character, they also had a lot of really cool information. There was a special case for Sep 11 that had dolls from the store that were sent on 9/10 and an obituary of Judy Garland from 1969 that was found in the wreckage. They believe that one of the workers building the towers was reading the paper that day and left it folded to her obituary inside the walls. Crazy. I tried to look up the story to provide a link but I couldn't find it.

Yes I definitely set up my camera and took a picture of myself in the museum.

After that I took a smaller highway for a while through small Kansas towns. This is me at an old historic site, but I just wanted a picture of me in Kansas with Corn fields in the background.




In Independence, Missouri I took a tour in the visitors center. My tour guide was a Sister Missionary from Australia so we talked a lot about our missions, the Pacific, and of course, the Pioneers. They have one of the first Editions of The Book of Mormon there, which I was excited to see. She also loved my camping story.


Before I left I checked out the corner stones that were laid for the temple just across the street from our Visitors Center. These are just replicas. In the background is the Church of Christ Temple.

As I drove across "Middle America" I wanted to listen to Little House on the Prairie but it wouldn't work. Instead I listened to Anne of Green Gables and LOVED IT. We all love the movie, but you must read the book. I recommend listening to it because of the way everyone talks. It was so good.

My goal was to get to St. Louis but I got tired too soon so I stayed in a Motel 6. I wanted to get an early start but I accidentally slept in. That didn't prevent me from stopping when I saw this looming at me from the Interstate.


It wasn't planned but I pulled over at the Arches in St. Louis. It was a beautiful morning on the banks of the Mississippi and they had old music playing. So fun. I randomly got a parking spot on the street right in front of the arch. I still don't know if it was legal but a lot of people were parking there and nobody got tickets.

You can take a ride to the top but I didn't do that because of $$ and also time. The line was like an hour and a half wait. I did wait 20 minutes to get in to the museum and look around. St. Louis was the last stop before the wild frontier for a lot of years. It wasn't just trappers and gold diggers that left from here but also the Mormon Pioneers. The museum had a lot of stories and quotes about going forth and paving their own way. In a cheesy way I can say I'm doing that too. I'm venturing out into the world to make my own way even when I know a lot of things and people are going to try to stop me.

I wanted to stop for authentic food at this point but got lost trying so I changed my mind. Not worth it.

From there on I basically had to hurry because all of my stops had put me behind. I had hoped to make it to Cleveland by 6:30 that evening.



I ended up getting there around 10:30. I unloaded my one bag and the important valuables and went to bed. Until Sept 3 I will be driving around in my crammed Jeep. I am staying in company housing until my apartment is available. Oh how I am counting down the days.

In all I'd say it was a very successful trip. Places were seen, experiences were had, people were met. And a tent is on my list of things to buy.
