The Best Gift

My Dad got me this framed picture. He got one for me and my three sisters. It is amazing how much each one described each of us individually. The greatest gift I could have received is knowing how much my Dad knows and understands me. I love it!

Lyrics

I’m a huge fan of song lyrics. Most of the time, lyrics are more important to me than the rhythm or melody of the song. These are just some lyrics that I love, have made me think, or that I agree with. You can guess which lyrics go under which category.

“No one can give you courage. No one can thicken your skin. I will not fail so you can be comfortable Cathy. I will not lose because you can’t win.”
-The Last 5 Years

“I’m not afraid. And I feel the calling of adventure. And I hear the ringing in my ear. The lights are glaring. Trumpets blaring. I’m right here. And I hear the calling of tomorrow. And I feel the stirring in my bones.”
-Songs For A New World

“I’ve been sitting watching life pass from the sidelines.”
-‘This Time’ by Jonathan Meyers

“Will you share your life with me...til there’s no one left who has ever known us apart.”
-The Last 5 Years

“Let your clarity define you. In the end, you will only just remember how it feels.”
-‘Little Wonders’ by Rob Thomas

“Love bursts in and suddenly all our wisdom disappears. Love makes fools of everyone. All the rules we make are broken.”
-‘Love Changes Everything’ by Andrew Lloyd Webber

“Did I make it that easy to walk right in and out of my life?”
-‘Almost Lover’ by A Fine Frenzy

“Sometimes the hardest thing and the right thing are the same.”
-’All At Once’ by The Fray

“My silence is my self defense.”
-‘And So It Goes’ by Billy Joel

“Does he wear your favorite color just so he can match your eyes?”
-‘That’s How You Know’ from Enchanted

“I can’t waste another minute after all that I’ve put in it. I’ve given you my best why does she get the best of you?”
-‘Stay’ by Sugarland

“it just goes to show you need me less than I need you.”
-‘Trust Me’ by The Fray

I Love This

Christmas Day

There is just no way to deny it. Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year. I just spent the whole day hanging out with my family and absolutely loved it. What could be better.

Snow!

I love the morning after a big snow! It used to be normal to have everybody in the neighborhood outside at the same time. Now it only happens when everybody is shoveling their snow.
I love how snow makes everything seem clean and beautiful. Even a pile of garbage looks magnificent. The streets in my neighborhood are all lined with trees that sag under the weight of the snow and make a perfect frame for the mountains behind them.
Why are we so preoccupied with pushing the snow out of the way? Can’t we just enjoy the beauty of it for a minute before we rush on with our busy lives? Ya. I’m one to talk. I just observed all of these things this morning as I drove to work...

100 Things About Me 2006

December 8, 2006 I made a list of 100 things about myself. I just found it and decided to post it here since apparently I love lists. This list reminds me of where I was one year ago. I’m tempted to do it again now to see how different it would be, but I think I remember this one taking me like 3 hours...we’ll see what happens.

100 things about me
Current mood: thoughtful

I read a cool blog the other day where a girl wrote a list of 100 things about herself, and at the bottom she said, "this is the most difficult list I have ever made."  Of course that got me thinking, so I've decided to give it a go.  I'd be amazed if any of you could actually get through this list.
1. I love Christmas!

2. When I eat oreos and milk I hold my oreos in the milk for 12 seconds to make it the perfect softness.

3. I ate TONS of oreos with Christy Dorsey in like 2nd grade in order to figure out the 12 second rule.

4. I love musicals and seriously wish that I could both act and sing so that I could be in one.

5. I am the second out of 4 girls in my family.

6. When I eat skittles I always have to save a red one for the very last one that I eat because that is the best kind.

7. I have a golden retriever named Logan who is really cute and that I love for reasons that my family can't seem to understand.

8. When I was a little girl my Granny took me to the library all the time.  To this day, because of her, I have a deep love of reading.

9. I am casual and pretty laid back, until it comes to people going under the speed limit.

10. I can't stand it when people ask over and over again "are you in a bad mood?"  That only puts me in a bad mood.

11. Most of my cousins on my Dad's side of the family are at least 25 years older than me.

12. I have a real soft spot for animals, especially dogs.  There is more of a chance of me crying in a movie when a dog dies than when a person dies.

13. I am really naive.

14. I use my sarcasm as a defense mechanism.

15. I love being behind the scenes helping other people look good.

16. I wish that capes were in style.  I would totally wear one because they are awesome.

17. I wish that my life was a musical, or at least had a soundtrack playing with the moods that I go through.

18. Once, I almost cut my thumb off with a machete.

19. I'm currently in the process of reading the Bible all the way through from cover to cover.

20. Most of the time, when people make dirty jokes or comments, I have no idea what they are talking about.

21. I don't know how to start a fire.

22. My friends really mean a lot to me, and I would do almost anything for them.

23. I've never gotten a ticket.

24. I have a balcony just off my bedroom and think it would be the coolest thing ever if a boy came to serenade me.

25. Pilot V-ball fine point is absolutely my favorite kind of pen, but the only place I can find it now is at the BYU bookstore.

26. I am a person that loves spontaneity, but also needs to have assurance of security, like making sure that I have a job over the break.

27. I love going to the movies by myself.

28. I have an Associate's of Science degree from Dixie State College.

29. People always say that I look like I'm a different nationality (Polynesian, Native American, Greek...), but I'm just white.

30. I think it would be kinda cool if I was another nationality.

31. I don't know what it is like to really suffer.

32. I know that a lot of people are misled by my personality.  There really is an interesting person behind my many facades.

33. Besides my family, there are few people that totally understand me and what I'm about.

34. I love hugs.

35. My Dad is one of my heroes.  I love and appreciate all the things he has taught me more than I can express.

36. I get embarrassed pretty easily.

37. I almost always have a theme song to describe my life at the moment.

38. I can't dance AT ALL.

39. I was raised mostly by my Dad and my Granny, but there are also a lot of people in my ward that have really helped me to become the person that I am today.

40. One of the most horrible feelings ever is knowing that I have done or said something that has caused someone else pain.

41. My favorite colors are red and green.

42. I know how to make roof out of leaves.

43. I love making people laugh.

44. I used to hate broccoli, but once I moved to college I realized that now I like it a lot.

45. I'm hoping that the same thing will happen with running.

46. I really enjoy school and learning.

47. I like to cry when I watch a movie or read because it helps me to feel like I'm letting it affect and change me.

48. I'm LDS.

49. I'm bilingual, and think that it would be really cool if I could learn Spanish well enough to call myself trilingual.

50. I don't like to talk about myself very much unless I know that the people around me won't think that I'm bragging.

51. I wish that I were better with kids.

52. I know that God loves me.

53. When I read a book, I always keep reading even if I don't like it because I know that I'll get sucked in and enjoy the plot.

54. Sometimes I don't get sucked in and enjoy the plot, but I realize that when I read the last page.

55. I am still pretty immature.

56. I was born on Christmas Day.

57. One of my goals is to one day have a house of my own with a library.  Inside that library I want a bookcase that covers an entire wall, floor to ceiling.

58. When people cry in front of me it makes me feel uncomfortable because I never know what to say to comfort them.

59. It is easy for me to memorize things.

60. I am really bad with names and faces.

61. Sometimes I get overwhelmed with the number of things that I need to work on or fix in my life.

62. I love my family more than anything, but they are always the first ones that I will snap at if I am stressed or had a bad day.

63. I love to videotape things in order to capture memories.

64. I bought a video camera in 10th grade that as taped a lot of things over the years.  I sure got my money’s worth.

65. Ever since I can remember, my family has gone to the cemetery on Memorial Day to put flowers on the graves of our family members.

66. I like to wake up early to get things done, unless its homework.

67. I seriously wish I could sing.

68. I have a teddy bear on my bed that I've slept with since I was 5.

69. I don't know anything about cars.

70. It is really easy for me to just be "one of the guys."

71. I really don't like to be wrong, but I'm wrong a lot.

72. Shaggy or hairy guys really don't attract me at all.  I prefer the clean shaven well kept kind.

73. I've lived a pretty sheltered life, but I'm fine with that.

74. I've only literally cried on someone's shoulder a couple of times in my life.
75. It would be really awesome to live in New York City.

76. I want to raise a family in a small town.  Really small.

77. For the first 11 years of my life, I didn't know there was any other kind of music besides Christmas and Country.

78. I like to have my picture taken, but there are only a few pictures that I really like myself in.

79. As long as I have one friend, I will feel comfortable and confident in any situation.

80. There isn't anyone that I can say I truly hate.

81. I've never been in love.

82. I prefer live theater to movies because it feels so real to me.

83. Sometimes I wish my life was more like the stories in the books I read or the plays that I watch.

84. Most of the time I'm grateful that my life isn't like those stories.

85. I've never regretted taking a leap of faith.

86. I've always regretted not taking that leap.

87. I can't stand to do a job that isn't fun or challenging, so whenever I have a job like that I make it into a game or do something to challenge myself in order to make it more interesting. (Example - how fast can I make a shake at Iceburg.)

88. When I hang out with someone for enough time, then the smallest things start to bother me.  Like when someone says aks instead of ask.  That drives me crazy!

89. I can't swim very well.

90. One day in 7th grade we were playing kickball and I ended up braking my leg and had to be in a cast for like 3 months.

91. I am horrible at spelling.  I know it, and I cannot deny or hide it.

92. I can play the guitar a little bit, but not enough for me to feel comfortable playing in front of people.

93. Mowing the lawn is one of my favorite things to do, along with shoveling the snow.

94. Dusk is my favorite time of day.  The sun has gone down, but it isn't dark yet.

95. I think it is my favorite time of day because it reminds me of when I would wait for my Dad to get home from work.  He'd always come at dusk.

96. I don't know what it feels like to have my heart broken.

97. Art is my worst subject.

98. There are lots of things going on in my life right now that I'm really excited about.

99. Laughing until I cry and my abs hurt is one of the best feelings in the world.

100. I am really blessed, and most of the time I feel as though I'm not grateful enough for everything that I have received, but I'm trying.

Congratulations to me for making a list of 100 things about me.  Congratulations to any of you who were able to get through it.  This took me a long time and a lot of thought.  I could keep going, but it would just get more and more boring with each number.  Thanks for tuning in!

So close.

"Trust Me"

Looking for something I've never seen
Alone and I'm in between
The place that I'm from and
The place that I'm in
A city I've never been
I found a friend or should I say foe
Said there's a few things you should know
We don't want you to see
We come and we go
Here today, gone tomorrow

Were only taking turns
Holding this world
It's how it's always been
When you're older, you will understand

If I say who I know it just goes to show
You need me less than I need you
Take it from me
We don't give sympathy
You can trust me trust nobody
But I said you and me
We don't have honesty
The things we don't want to speak
I'll try to get out but I never will
Traffic is perfectly still

Were only taking turns
Holding this world
It's how it's always been
When you're older you will understand

And again maybe you don't
And again maybe you won't

When you're older
You might understand
When you're older
You might understand

There are some days when I get so close to fitting into the puzzle.

Spring Break 08 NYC!

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." -- Mark Twain

Last November I cashed my paycheck from all of my overtime working on the school musical, and I bought tickets to fly to California and go to Wicked in LA. During that trip I realized how traveling really isn’t out of my reach. I always thought it seemed like something only rich people could do. I think rich people just do it easier. Ever since California, I’ve been going places. Every paycheck takes me somewhere.

The memories and friends that I’ve made while traveling are some of the greatest experiences I’ve had. Life isn’t just about school and work. There is a whole population of possible friends out there. For me, traveling is just an excuse to make friends.

THIS IS GOING TO BE SO MUCH FUN!

People

I just think it is so cool to look back at my life and see all of the many people that I have met. When I take a step back and examine it, I can see how every person in my life has influenced me for the better. I’ve met so many people... I must be a pretty amazing person by now!

Making friends can be fairly simple. It’s the keeping friends that always snags me up.

Top 10 Moments of the Semester

The semester ended today and this has caused me to reflect on the last four and a half months. It was definitely the most challenging semester academically. Factor into that how busy I was with work, clubs, callings, and activities - I can’t believe I made it through alive. While reflecting, several moments quickly came to my mind and I was able to compile this list of the 10 best moments of the semester:

1. Crossing the finish line at the Salt Lake Half marathon and realizing that I can do anything if I set my mind to it.

2. The last lesson I taught as the Relief Society Teacher. Sad time, but amazing experience.

3. Feeling down and out, then having Robbie run in and give me a big hug.

4. Seeing something I planned and organized be successful and fun - the LDSSA Halloween Carnival.

5. Speaking Spanish with a kid in Mexico and understanding what was going on.

6. The conversation in Big Bertha between Cedar City and Salt Lake.

7. Nina and Jenni Lou's discussion about how I was born to be a stage manager.

8. Translating in the MTC for Elder Holland on Thanksgiving morning.

9. Joel's awesome game with the family on Thanksgiving. SO FUN!

10. Talking til 5 AM about anything and everything.

There were some times I didn't like it too much, but looking back on it now I can say that I really did love this semester.

I read this week that the lists people make say a lot about who they are. I usually just write lists on this blog. i wonder what my lists say about me.

Overcoming Fears

Today I stood up in front of an audience, and I sung a solo. It was 100% terrifying, but I got through it in one piece. I knew from the get go that the class would challenge me, but I’m grateful that I followed through with it. Who wants to look back on their lives with regret?

I’ve never regretted doing something that scared me, but I’ve always regretted letting my fear stop me

I'm enjoying it

I’m enjoying this whole “blog” thing. I think it’s because it is causing me to reflect on the day. I’ve met some people this semester who have caused me to ponder a lot more and analyze my feelings. I hate doing that when I know I’m wrong though, and that is what happened today. Lame.

Bright side. I seriously love this little guy.

He makes me smile no matter how lame I’m being.

Something I learned today:
A real friend is somebody who can make you smile and laugh, even when you are dead set on being in a bad mood.

Tough Day

I really took a beating from life today, but the good news is that today is over.

Why is it that...

- when I want to cry the most tears just won’t come, but when I’m trying to be brave and strong I just can’t hold them back.

it’s annoying.

Confused

Are books, projects, and grades on a piece of paper more important than relationships with those around you?

Should more time be spent doing a job in a career you want to go into, or doing the homework to get the degree for said career?

Is it worth the effort of developing or preserving a friendship if you are the only one trying?

Proud and happy, or sad and left behind?

Home and family, or travel and adventure?

Is the beauty of snow worth the uncomfortableness of cold for 4 months?

Is it sometimes nice to feel pain just so you can feel something?

Do the things we dream at night mean something more?

If excitement is contagious, why isn’t anyone else catching it?

Does anyone really get it?

Finally to have found my niche

Saturday, November 24,

NICHE:
a place or position suitable or appropriate for a person or thing.
Ecology. the position or function of an organism in a community of plants and animals.

Today I went to my first rehearsal for a new show I’m working on. It’s just in a small theater with no budget for...anything really. I find it so interesting how I was there for only a short amount of time, yet I felt so comfortable. That just isn’t normal for me. I don’t feel comfortable anywhere!
After all of the frustration and confusion that involved 4 different colleges and going on 5 years of school - I finally know for certain that I’ve found my niche. This idea is so comforting, liberating, and empowering! I didn’t realize where I would end up when I made the decision to transfer to Westminster.

"When someone makes a decision, he is really diving into a strong current that will carry him places he had never dreamed of when he first made the decision." -The Alchemist

is this blog thing really for me?

Friday November 23, 2007

So I’ve never really thought blogs were that cool until I started doing things that I wanted to talk about. Granted, I’m not sure very many people actually want to hear about it all, but that won’t stop me from talking. I had an incredible summer of adventures and thought it would end when school started. Isn’t it great how things never stop happening, and how you are always in the middle of one adventure or another? My amazing summer adventures include:
- El Camino de Santiago de Compostela in Spain
- Going back to Vanuatu
- California
- Flaming Gorge
- Running a half marathon
- My 5 year high school reunion
Ya...I’m pretty sure I love life.
